I spotted these two plantains growing together the other day, a great opportunity to describe them both. Ribwort, Plantago lanceolata, at the back and greater plantain, Plantago major, in the foreground. Both are expectorant and demulcent, and have anti-inflammatory properties on the skin. They are well known as a first aid treatment for insect bites and effective against nettle stings, and can be applied fresh or in a balm.
The ribwort I use a lot for its properties in relation to the respiratory system, particularly on blocked sinus, and is slightly more effective than its close relation.
A common herb found in fields, gardens and waysides it should be in every-ones herbal first aid kit.
